For Malaysian, I think most would like comedy. Comedy put a smile on your face, after a busy and tiring day. Its also easy to produce, hence a lot of Malaysian comedy genre are produced. Its low budget, and doesn't require expertise in special or visual effects.
For cinema, most will prefer action, where the full capability of the sound system and visuals of the cinema are fully utilized.
There will be a time in the future where we can produce great sci-fi or fantasy such as Star Wars or Lord of The Ring.
I have a different view of what Malaysian really like. I think most Malaysian especially the younger generations enjoy films that has a lot of actions and great aesthetic appearance. This can be said from the success of all the action superhero movies like Spiderman, The Dark Knight or Iron Man.
Sadly, none of the movies stated are made by local filmmakers. This is what the local filmmakers need to focus on, if they ever dream of getting their films outside of Malaysia.
It all depends on the level of generations that we have, for children they enjoy comedy and animation type of movie the most while the adult would go for action and romance.

I think most viewers like movies that they could imagine it would happen in their daily life. Movies like Star Wars help people fantasize.
