What is wrong with the Malaysian film industry?

The Malaysian film industry may not be as prominent as Hollywood, due to Hollywood's sheer size. They are catering to a country many times our size, whereas our film industry is a much smaller and ever-developing one.

And of our preference towards international films? Globalization perhaps. We see, read and feed on Western influences and media. It's not a good or bad thing, it's just something that's occurring. Mainstream media has permeated through our society.

With that said, our Malaysian film industry is alive and kicking. Yes, they may be low budget, not as large scale or not as fancy as others but we have won awards and we have been nominated. Look towards Yasmin Ahmad's films. She has produced and directed, Gubra, Sepet, Muallaf and Mukhsin. She's one that has never failed to deliver, touching upon different social issues that Malaysians face.

Despite a few hiccups and threats of censorship, Yasmin Ahmad and many other local directors have remained defiant and continue to produce film after film. Why? Because their films have attempted to address the many issues that we fail to discuss and thus has remained a 'taboo'.

  1. Malaysian do not have the quality and experiences of a professional movie maker and that is the main reason the local movies is in this level. There are far a lot to improve to achieve the highest quality of movie making.

  2. Most local film makers are dealing with a lot of obstacle in producing their masterpiece. Censorship, tight budget, pressure from the production company and so on.

There is no real freedom for the local film makers to produce a film that touch the sensitive issue in our community, in the end these film makers choose a much more easier genre such as comedy or romantic.

But things may be changing now with the emergence of upcoming films like The Malay Chronicles:Bloodlines and Magika by the three brothers known as KRU.

  3. I Agree with both of you. But what i agree most is about the obstacle in producing local movies.

It's about time the government realized that they have to uplift strict rules such as censorship to improve local movies.

  4. Lack of creativity in creating a good movie among the local film makers is obvious in local film industry.

  5. For Hollywood, I think its their marketing is what makes their movie spread world wide. Even if some of their movies are not good, they still get good ticket sales, because they spend a lot on advertisement and marketing.

We should learn to be open minded and watch movies from other parts of the world. There are good movies from Europe or Japan for example, that we failed to notice or try watching.
