What is wrong with the Malaysian film industry?

The Malaysian film industry may not be as prominent as Hollywood, due to Hollywood's sheer size. They are catering to a country many times our size, whereas our film industry is a much smaller and ever-developing one.

And of our preference towards international films? Globalization perhaps. We see, read and feed on Western influences and media. It's not a good or bad thing, it's just something that's occurring. Mainstream media has permeated through our society.

With that said, our Malaysian film industry is alive and kicking. Yes, they may be low budget, not as large scale or not as fancy as others but we have won awards and we have been nominated. Look towards Yasmin Ahmad's films. She has produced and directed, Gubra, Sepet, Muallaf and Mukhsin. She's one that has never failed to deliver, touching upon different social issues that Malaysians face.

Despite a few hiccups and threats of censorship, Yasmin Ahmad and many other local directors have remained defiant and continue to produce film after film. Why? Because their films have attempted to address the many issues that we fail to discuss and thus has remained a 'taboo'.

Where do people get movies?

Nowadays it’s a trend to download movies from the internet . This is due to the internet technology. People can easily set up internet connection and it’s cheap. Instead of buying the original copy of movies or pirated ones most of the people would rather download the movies or online movie streaming which is kind of popular right now. The advantages of downloading from the internet is people can enjoy latest movies at great quality on their screen because internet connection is everywhere but unfortunately there is disadvantages too. Not all of the movies are high quality and you’ll need to pay to download high quality movies because the material is copyrighted. Copyrighted materials is illegal for free downloads.

People are frustrated of this situation and willing to pay for original copies to enjoy high quality movies but unfortunately some of them can’t afford buying the original ones which lead them to buy pirated copies. The bad things about pirated ones is we are unsure about the quality until we watch the cd or dvd and piracy is illegal. Even though it’s a lot cheaper than the original but buying pirated cd/dvd is not good for our film industry it’s better to go for the original one so that our film industry can gain more profit. Another way to enjoy high quality movies is go to the cinema. Just pay RM 10-15 for the ticket and you can enjoy your movies in a big screen with your pop corns but the problem is most of the people don’t have time to go to the cinema. They probably busy with their assignments and work.

WHICH ONE DO YOU PREFER?

PIRATED CD/DVD/BLU-RAY ? ORIGINAL CD/DVD/BLU-RAY ? DOWNLOAD ? CINEMA?

Malaysian Movie?

When we talk about Malaysian movies, we talk about movies that are in Bahasa Malaysia or Malay language. But did it pass your notice that there are movie's being made in Mandarin or Tamil? Are these movie considered Malaysian movie? Yes, because its made by Malaysian, be it Chinese or Indian.

Malaysia is a multi-racial country, but is there a need for a movie to be made into several languages?

When we look at the biggest film industry in the world, Hollywood, the language they use are English. However, America is not only comprised of Caucasians who speaks English. There are various races, and its even more multiracial than Malaysia. But all of them understand that English is their main language, so Hollywood doesn't cater to other language.

Let us re-examine Malaysia's situation again. We are multi-racial, at the same time, our movies are also in different language. Now this does make it seems like Malaysia is not united. What happen to 1Malaysia? I'm not saying that Malaysian movies should all be in Malay language. All I'm saying is that movies should not only target certain race in our country, be it Malay, Chinese or Indian. That only limits its viewers. If we put a limit to our movies, then that means we limit our movies to Malaysian market only. What happen to our dream of competing with Hollywood and other major film industry? Is it just all talk?

Content in our movie should not be one-sided. There can be times, when movies theme celebrate our diferences in culture, but there should be movie that everyone in our country can enjoy. Something eveyone in our country could relate to. Movie maker should not be selfish. Instead they should produce movie that is viewable by all. Movies should portray our unity, even if we are not as united as we hope to be. There is a chance the unity that is portrayed in the movie, might really come true. Isn't that what we trully want?

Our mentality should also change. We should not avoid movie's that are in different language. This shows that we are not making a move to understand our friends from different races. This shows that we only preach of unity, but didnt make an effort to try understand the other fellow Malaysians. Movie producers should make an effort to provide subtitles, so that everyone can understand the movie.

Malaysians can only hope for a movie that can be enjoyed by everyone in this country. When that time come's, I'm sure our movie will be able to compete in the international scene.

These are some of the best that represent true Malaysian movies. And these movie are all worthy of praise.

Upin Ipin- Its good to teach children to be friends with other race.

Talent time- good watch, good message.

Gadoh- It's reality, Malaysian love to fight over differences.
