Film Industry of Malaysia

The local film industry has been around since early 1930s with the first film was "Laila Majnun" which can be considered as one of Malaysia's best film of all time. The local film industry continue to grow but had a sudden halt when the Japanese invade Malaysia or "Tanah Melayu" in 1941 but it soon continue when the World War 2 ended in 1945.

The year is now 2010, the local film industry is still struggling to capture the Malaysian market as they have to compete with major films coming from Hollywood. There has been some great breakthrough in terms of scale and technology of the local films in recent years, but it is still not enough to sparks a change in local film industriy. Films like Puteri Gunung Ledang and Cicak-Man can be considered as a major breakthrough in terms of the size and the use of technology in local films scene.

Malaysian audience are well exposed to the Hollywood's movies such as the recent released Avatar or Alice in Wonderland which definitely becomes a big competition to the local films like the recent released Adnan Sempit or Rempit V3 which is not as unique as their Hollywood's counterpart. This is not a good thing for the local film industries as they will stuck with only the local market and not the global market.

Local filmmakers and production companies need to improve their approach and quality of their work if they ever dream to get their movies to audience outside of Malaysia. There are plenty of areas in film making that the local production companies and filmmakers that are still weak or can be considered poor.

Lets continue discussing about this topic in the comment section.

  3. Too many comedies. A little is enough. Malaysian should start creating quality movies that can at least compete with international movies.

  4. I agree with Adib, where Malaysian movie tend to focus on comedy. Local movie makers should be bold and try out many different genre out there. This would make the local movie scene in Malaysia more vibrant and colorful.
